About

The Alexander/Madison Chapter – Greater Kansas City /Leavenworth Area  9th & 10th (Horse) Calvary Association was formed in 1966. The first President Trooper James Madison served with the  10th Calvary in North Africa around 1944. Our current President is Trooper J.R Bruce-Regimental Sargent Major.  Vice President Carrie Milton. Secretary Barbra Baker, Public Relations Bill Young, Treasure Donna Madison, Photographer Colonel Len Nevels and a host of dedicated members. It is an honor and privilege for our members to exhibit the legacy of the Buffalo Soldier.

Authentication is important to us; we can and we will uphold  the integrity of the Buffalo Soldier’s rich history.  With enthusiasm we are able to display original Buffalo Soldier Artifacts during special events and in museums.  On several occasions with a modest cast, we have presented an original play “Fiddlers Green” written by member Donna Madison.

It is our hope to be Ready and Forward to educate the public on the impact the Buffalo Soldier has made on this Great Nation of Ours. The battles he endured whether on the plains or with local hostels, it is with great tenacity that he soldiered on. We honor him.

  1. I would like to arrange for a program presentation to the Mary Paxton Study Class for Women at 1:30 pm on Monday, Nov. 18, 2019. This organization has been in existance and met regularly since 1894. Bess Truman was a member at one time. Generally there are 25 to 30 women in attendance. Normally we meet at the Truman Library, but during its time of reconstruction, we will be meeting at Good Shepherd Community of Christ Church, 4341 Blue Ridge Boulevard, KC MO. We do offer a $60 honorarium for the program of about 45 minutes. I had sent a request earlier, directed to the education chair, but am making the request here, also, to be certain someone sees this during the busy summer months. I need to turn in my program for printing by Sept. 1, so will appreciate a quick response. You may contact me via my email address margetroeh@troeh.com or my cell phone (816) 799-2452. Really looking forward to having you with us. Thank you. Marge Troeh

  2. I am on the planning committee for our family reunion, which will be held in Kansas City, MO in July of 2020. We are interested in learning about the history of Kansas City, and would like to know if you could give us a presentation about the Buffalo Soldiers on Friday, July 3, 2020?

  11. Hello! I wanted to reach out to you about the possibility of doing some type of program at our library. I don’t know what types of programs you do…but our small library is getting ready to allow programs back indoors, so I’m looking at August through the fall time. I can also do outdoor programs, if something presents itself that way too.

Our library is in Linwood, KS and part of Leavenworth County, so not far from Leavenworth and the Fort. We’ve never had this type of historical program before, and I think it would be really interesting to offer.

Email is the easiest way to reach out to me. Let me know what kinds of programs or events you might be currently offering, fees associated with them, if you want to come out to Linwood, and what type of availability you all have. We normally do programs on Thursday evenings.

Look forward to learning more soon! Thanks!
    Kim Downing

  12. Vets Day Parade Theme Set

FORT WORTH, Texas – “Saluting Buffalo Soldiers” is the theme of this year’s Tarrant County Veterans Day Parade to step off on Friday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. Participants will form up in the Fort Worth Panther Island Pavilion parking lot, march down North Forest Park Blvd. along the Clear Fork of the Trinity River and return.

In 1887, Congress created the first professional African American Army units. The men of the 9th and 10th Cavalry, and the 24th and 25th Infantry, served with pride and courage. They were stationed in Texas from 1867-1886 before moving further west. Eventually, they became known as “Buffalo Soldiers.”

Although months away, The Tarrant County Veterans Council is busy planning for this special event. A parade website has launched (https://www.fw2022parade.org) and the parade committee is soliciting support from individuals and organizations across North Texas for this year’s celebration.

“Everyone can join in our salute to Buffalo Soldiers and all military veterans who have, are and will continue to make great contributions,” notes Parade Chairman Ken Cox. “Simply visit our website where you can learn how to support, volunteer and take part.

“Will you consider joining this year’s festivities?” Cox asks. “If you’re not available, please help us spread the word. Hope y’all can join our Cowtown salute on Veterans Day 2022.”

Fort Worth’s annual Veterans Day celebration began more than 100 years ago as an armistice procession through downtown in 1919 to honor those who had fought in World War I.

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks from Birmingham, Ala., sought to expand Armistice Day to salute all veterans. Weeks led a delegation to then Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who supported the idea of a national Veterans Day. Weeks led the first celebration in 1947 and annually until his death in 1985.

  14. Hi,

I’m going to be visiting on August and want to view this memorial. My father was a Buffalo Soldier in WWII. I still have his uniform jacket with the buffalo patch on it. Do you have a roster, from the US Army, with names of the men whom served as Buffalo Soldiers.

    Thanks,
    Paulette Houston
